totem star @ king street station
Totem Star is partnering with the City of Seattle and the Cultural Space Agency to build a new 2,000 sqft recording studio and creative home for our young people at King Street Station in the heart of Seattle’s vibrant downtown center between Pioneer Square and Chinatown/International District.
The Cultural Space Agency is a mission-driven, values-based cultural real estate development organization that intends to make STATION SPACE at King Street Station and accessible artistic hub that supports, advocates for, and prioritizes youth-focused arts & cultural organizations that are Black-, Women-, and/or Indigenous-led.
OUR NEW HOME WILL BE LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED HISTORIC TRAIN STATION, FUTURE HOME TO SEVERAL OTHER AMAZING LOCAL ARTS ORGANIZATIONS.

WHY THE MOVE?
More space = more opportunity to serve young artists! Our original space at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center is about the size of a one-car garage (225 sqft). The new studio at King Street Station will provide 8 times more space to serve our youth (2,000 sqft), and will include common areas for group gatherings, multiple studios for learning and practicing recording skills, and flexible creative space for teaching music video-related skills.
A more centralized location near public transportation allows for better access for our youth. We currently have artists joining us from all over the region, as far as Bellingham and Olympia. Time saved commuting = more time for learning!
A bigger space will allow our organization to:
Serve more youth in the greater Seattle area
Provide access to world-class equipment and high quality recording spaces for our artists and mentors
Offer additional disciplines and training in video, photography, audio engineering, etc.
THE MUSICAL LEGACY OF SOUTH JACKSON STREET
Historic King Street is located on South Jackson Street, where historically Black-owned jazz clubs used to thrive. With this legacy in mind, we’re humbled to re-center a musical culture in this location, and help to grow the next generation of diverse Seattle artists.

Seattle has a rich music scene with so many historic musicians such as Brandi Carlile, Sir-Mix-a-Lot, Jimi Hendrix, Heart, Quincy Jones, and Pearl Jam. We’re proud to continue to build the next generation of Seattle artists right in the heart of our city.
This location will help us continue to foster and strengthen partnerships within our local community and neighboring “Station Space” arts and cultural organizations. Our recording studio and new home will be open to young people from all of our partners at King Street Station.
